Obama Inches Into Competitive Colorado Senate Race : Npr

Mark Udall’s re-election campaign. The president is scheduled to arrive in Denver Tuesday evening and give a speech on Wednesday. Obama later has a closed-door fundraiser for Udall, who is seeking a second term in the Senate. Udall’s race against Republican congressman Cory Gardner is one of the most competitive Senate races in the country. Gardner has hammered Udall’s support for Obama’s health care law.

Obama Coming To Colorado For Udall Fundraiser : NPR

“I don’t think one visit by the president is going to change anything in terms of the dynamics of the campaign.” While Obama’s approval rating has slipped into the low-40s, he remains a prolific fundraiser for Democrats. And with the Colorado Senate race expected to be one of the most expensive in the country, Udall wants to maintain a financial edge over his challenger. Gardner, who only announced his Senate bid in late February, had raised $3.7 million as of June 24, well short of Udall’s $12 million haul. Even with a fundraising boost, Udall’s appearance with Obama creates some awkwardness. Udall has tried to define himself as an independent-minded politician, touting his criticism of the Obama administration’s surveillance programs.

Obama Taps Donor to Be Ambassador to Costa Rica – ABC News

. Washington (AFP) – US President Barack Obama on Tuesday requested $3.7 billion in emergency funding from Congress to help cope with a surge of unaccompanied child immigrants from Central America. Obama said the funds — a far higher sum than he signaled he would request late last month — would help ease an “urgent humanitarian situation” that has seen tens of thousands of minors from El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras illegally cross the southern US border this year after a perilous overland journey across Mexico. To stem the flow, the administration is looking to beef up border direct loan forgiveness security with aerial surveillance, improve housing for the undocumented arrivals and speed up their deportations. The appropriation would go to several US government agencies, funding an increase in the number of immigration judges, asylum officers and border agents; an expansion in court capacity; and the addition of detention facilities, the officials said. Obama, in a letter to House Speaker John Boehner, urged Congress to “act expeditiously” on his request.

That race looks to be one of the tightest in the country, and Obama needs Udall to win so Democrats have a fighting chance of keeping control of the Senate. To that end, the Denver trip also includes a fundraiser which Obama will headline to raise money for candidates such as the Colorado Democrat. However, none of the major Democratic candidates in Colorado who are up for re-election this year are expected to join Obama at Cheesman Park. Instead, the event which is closed to the public but open to the press will include attendees “invited by the governor’s office and other community organizations and elected officials,” Earnest said. Several hundred Colorado residents are expected to attend. Obama arrived to overcast skies about 6:10 p.m.
